Driver's Ed wraps up this week after it's genesis in early June. The summer is divided into "2" sessions, each session has 2 classes. This summer approx. 85 students participated in total, 8th graders thru 11th graders. Mike Wilmoth, Rick Phelps, and Jamie Ybarra are the instructors and all "3" have been instructing Drivers Ed now for over 25 years! The program includes classroom instruction as well as hands-on driving instruction.
I was able to speak with Mr. Wilmoth briefly Thursday out at WHS as the students wrapped up their training on parking and parallel parking. He indicated generally, the overall goal of drivers education is to teach and ingrain in the students, the importance and application of defensive driving skills. He emphasized you have to pay attention and be aware of what the drivers around you are doing at all times.
Mr. Wilmoth went on to say, for the new student driver, making right and left turns is difficult at first. Parallel parking is difficult as well, even for the more experienced student driver. With practice they do get better of course. (I was quite impressed with the student's abilities today to properly parallel park).
Mr. Wilmoth also indicated, the most challenging part of the course for the students is usually the Interstate Hwy driving, i.e. the turnpike. The speeds are increased and just a lot more going on.
We all remember our Driver's Ed classes and instructors. It's a great program to have students participate in. USE OF SEATBELTS is greatly emphasized as well, great advice for all of us!
